It’s your life; live it well. Healthy Options are Key

It can be hard to maintain a healthy lifestyle when working traditional 9-5 business hours. It is likely you sit at a desk all day in front of a computer, have maybe an hour lunch break and encounter candy temptations every which way you turn. Despite the unfortunate environment of most offices, there are ways to make small changes to improve office and individual health. May is Employee Health and Fitness Month, and a great opportunity to incorporate new initiatives!

Here’s a round-up of a few of our favorite ways to make the office healthier.

  1. Lunch or breakfast meeting? Skip the bagels and pizza, opt for healthier options such as fruit, salads, and lean sandwiches. Not only is it healthier, your team will feel better after eating and be more energized to work. At Biorasi, we kicked off the month with a fresh fruit breakfast for the office. Everyone loved it!
  2. Stand up! Set a timer on your phone, in your calendar, on your watch, anything to prompt you to stand up and walk around every 25-30 minutes. Time clocks encourage dedicated task completion during work and give a body and brain a chance to mix it up when it’s time to walk.
  3. Make a choice. Swap out the candy bowls for healthier options like nuts, dried fruits and rice cakes. Send out a company email encouraging everyone to join in the challenge for the month and band together to get the candy off the desks. You’d be amazed at the hundreds of calories you add to your diet by snacking on sweets and what cutting that out will do.
  4. Drink water! Let me say it again, drink water! If you don’t have a larger cup or bottle to keep on your desk, grab one. It’s a great way to keep track of how much water you’re drinking and kills the excuse you can’t get up again during work time to fill up another cup. Added bonus, reusable containers are environmentally friendly.
  5. Leave the office. This doesn’t mean have a group skip day (it isn’t senior year), it means make sure you step outside the building at least once a day. It can be to grab lunch or just to take a walk. Go outside if you can, but at least make it to the common area in your building. Just sitting inside all day, even with the 25-30 minute timer walks, is not good for your physical or mental health.
